Danube Bend (full day)

The region north of Budapest features breathtaking natural scenery, historical and artistic treasures and thriving folklore. The Danube Bend is so called because it is where the river is forced South between the hills. Not suprisingly, the tops of these hills all offer magnificent views. The two focuses of this tour, Szentendre and Visegrád, are were centers of activity during the medieval period and have reatined much of their old-world character.

Danube Bend Itinerary

1. Szentendre, a Mediterranean-like town settled by Serbs fleeing Turkish persecution in the 14th-17th centuries, is the most popular destination along the Danube, and for good reason. Its colorful houses and narrow alleys are littered with dozens of museums, galleries, shops, and cosy restaurants. Some things not to miss are the ancient buildings of the main square, the great art museums, and the playful Marzipan Museum featuring a fantasy world of marzipan creations. Also worth seeing is the open-air Ethnographic Museum (Skanzen).

Two miles from the center of town, the amazing collection of folk monuments transported here from across Hungary is housed in 340 buildings in 10 sections. On summer weekends, fabulous demonstrations of handicrafts draw large crowds.

2. The site of present-day Visegrád was a military camp in Roman times, and later a fortified castle built in the 13th century by the conquering Hungarians. It remained a stronghold of Hungarian kings throughout the middle ages, and served as Hungary’s capital in the 14th century. Our tour will explore the former royal castle, including the area that once housed the Hungarian coronation jewels. Visitors can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the Danube Valley. Also near-by is Solomon Tower, a 13th century Romanesque dwelling tower; it is among the oldest and best preserved of such towers in Central Europe.
