Budapest
Budapest, built on either side of the Danube River, is considered one of the most beautiful Central European capitals. The Jewish community there, which dates back to Roman times, has always played an active role in the city’s economic, political and cultural life. Today, with approximately 100,000 members, Budapest boasts the third largest Jewish population in Europe. Budapest’s many fine synagogues, kosher restaurants and Jewish Schools are a testament to its rich history and thriving current community. The Dohány Street Synagogue is the largest and most impressive in Europe. Next to it stands the moving Holocaust Memorial, dedicated to the over 600,000,000 Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis. Artifacts and documents pertaining to the history of the Jews in Hungary can be found in the fabulous Jewish Museum.
